Orchard operation near Waverly, Mo On a recent trip to Columbia to visit my daughter attending the University of Missouri my wife and I took a scenic route through the historic town of Lexington, then went north on highway 65 out of Waverly. The hilly area is home to many fruit orchards, some of which line the roads. Fruit stands and orchard stores are common to the area. North out of Waverly across the Missouri River the landscape changes to flat bottomland containing expansive row crop farms covering thousands of acres. 25 Years in the Life of a Food Bank

Harvesters food bank in Kansas City has been around for 30 years now and the organization acknowledged 25 years of service and accomplishments of the president Karen Haren during an all-staff meeting today. Karen attributed the success and growth of the food bank to "staying on mission and the great staff and volunteers." The ceremony reflected on the increase in food distributed over the 25 years. In 1986, 4 million pounds of food was distributed and $100,000 were raised to purchase food. In 2010, 35 million pounds of food was distributed and $3 million was raised for food purchase. This represents a nine-fold increase in food distributed in and around Kansas City over the 25 years. The large increase in the numbers of food distributed is bittersweet for most people in the food assistance business because an increase in food distribution means they are provided relief yet the demand still grows. Reports of an economic recovery are exaggerated

Harvesters, a 30-year old food bank in Kansas City, is opening a second distribution center in Topeka to better cover its service area in Kansas. The reports of the economy improving are quietly eclipsed by a still increasing demand at food pantries, as well as record highs in food stamp applications , especially in Missouri and Kansas . Several other food banks across the US are expanding the size of their warehouses, but others are expanding new programs to serve specific groups, like providing backpacks full of food over the weekend for school-age children and programs geared toward homeless high school kids.
