This video shows how an old bike I received from a neighbor was donated to Revolve KC Bike Shop at an April 13, 2013 bicycle recycle event in Kansas City. Elizabeth Bejan with Revolve describes how bikes are refurbished and in turn donated to individuals in the Kansas City area.

Harvesters gives (compost) back to the community

Construction of the pad to hold a bin for composting is nearly complete. The pad and gravel driveway are on the back lot at Harvesters in KC. Megan FitzGerald with Harvesters described a new composting initiative to provide a large quantity of waste vegetables and fruit to Missouri Organic . The effort redirects waste from a dumpster destined for the landfill to an operation that will recycle the material for compost for backyard gardens. She described the project as an exciting community program -- one that both employees and volunteers are eager to support because it improves Harvesters' efforts at sustainability and the green movement. The project required significant planning to ensure the processing of waste met food safety guidelines, did not require an abnormal amount of labor, and did not require an initial cash outlay. Lee's Summit Proposes the Sanity Approach to Waste Reduction

Finally! The city of Lee's Summit, Missouri took a responsible approach to trash service by replacing an all-you-can-dump-with-no-free-recycling-option to a "volume-based" approach similar to the successful service used in Kansas City, Missouri. After the service is changed, then those residents who have paid $2.50 per month to trash companies like Deffenbaugh can rely on the new service for free recycling, plus get the satisfaction that waste will be reduced and recycling increased. ...the City Council directed city staff to issue the state-required two-year notice to all solid waste haulers providing services in the City that the City is considering implementation of a comprehensive, citywide, solid waste program.  The program currently proposed by city staff includes volume-based pricing for residential trash service with unlimited, curbside recycling at no additional fee .  Under this proposed program, residents would only pay for the amount of trash they discard ;...
